Chennai’s ₹1,383 Cr Urban Development Projects Launched by CM Stalin

Under the Greater Chennai Development Scheme, Foundation Laid for 79 New Projects Worth ₹1,383 Crores, Advanced Medical Equipment Provided to Periyar Nagar Government Hospital, and 29 Completed Projects Inaugurated by Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M. K. Stalin

Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M. K. Stalin, in an event held at the Kolathur Zone, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 79 new projects under the Greater Chennai Development Scheme. These initiatives are implemented by the Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Tamil Nadu Electricity Generation and Distribution Corporation, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, and the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare at a total estimated cost of ₹1,383 crores. Additionally, advanced medical equipment worth ₹77 crores was provided to Periyar Nagar Government Hospital, and 29 completed projects were inaugurated.

Greater Chennai Development Scheme

In the 2023-24 Budget, it was announced that a three-year ₹1,000 crore project titled “Greater Chennai Development Scheme” would be implemented to ensure comprehensive development in Chennai. This initiative aimed to address issues like infrastructure deficits and civic challenges in identified areas.

Under this scheme, works included the construction of model schools, housing units, and multi-level parking facilities, the installation of LED streetlights in key locations, CCTV camera systems, and the creation of green spaces, playgrounds, and water recycling units. These initiatives also included upgrades to healthcare facilities, improvement of water supply and sewer systems, solid waste management projects, and environmental beautification programs.

On 14.03.2024, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. Stalin inaugurated 87 projects worth ₹2,097 crores under this scheme. So far, 252 projects worth ₹6,309 crores have been undertaken under the Greater Chennai Development Scheme. Continuing this effort, 79 new projects worth ₹1,383 crores were launched today.

Highlights of the New Projects

Under the Greater Chennai Corporation, residential units costing ₹129.50 crores in Kolathur Zone and ₹143.56 crores in Stanley Medical Zone were initiated. Multipurpose halls and playgrounds were established at various locations like Royapuram and Villivakkam, along with an ₹8 crore cultural center in Choolaimedu and other community facilities.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board undertook water pipeline and sewage treatment upgrades worth ₹440 crores. Tamil Nadu Electricity Generation and Distribution Corporation initiated two projects worth ₹70 crores, including a new substation in Tondiarpet.

The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board launched 946 new housing units in areas like Pulianthope and Ellispuram at a total cost of ₹134 crores.

Advanced Medical Equipment for Periyar Nagar Hospital

Under the Department of Public Health and Family Welfare, Periyar Nagar Government Hospital was equipped with advanced medical equipment worth ₹77 crores. The upgraded facilities include specialized departments for cardiology, neurology, oncology, and gastroenterology.

Inauguration of Completed Projects

The Chief Minister inaugurated 29 completed projects costing ₹38 crores. These include multi-purpose halls in Manali Zone, fitness centers, additional classrooms in schools, and recreational facilities in areas like Madhavaram and Royapuram.
