Harmeet Dhillon Nominated as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights
Hyderabad : US President Donald Trump has nominated Harmeet K. Dhillon, a prominent Indian-American attorney, as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. Praising her commitment to civil liberties, Trump highlighted her work on issues such as Big Tech censorship, religious freedoms during the COVID-19 pandemic, and election law. Dhillon, a respected figure in the Sikh community, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the support of her family.
Announcing the nomination on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “Harmeet K. Dhillon has consistently stood up for our cherished civil liberties. Her dedication to defending free speech, religious freedom, and fair elections is remarkable. She is one of the nation’s leading election lawyers, committed to ensuring that only legal votes are counted.”
Trump also underscored Dhillon’s professional credentials, noting that she is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School. She has served as a clerk at the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and has an extensive track record in civil rights and election law.
In response, Dhillon expressed her excitement, stating, “It has always been my dream to serve this great nation. I am honored to join a talented team of attorneys at the Department of Justice, led by Pam Bondi.” She also thanked her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey.
Dhillon, who was born in Chandigarh, India, and immigrated to the United States as a child, has made significant contributions to public service. In 2016, she became the first Indian-American to speak at the Republican National Convention. Despite facing challenges, including a racial attack after reciting the Sikh prayer “Ardas” at the Republican National Convention in July, Dhillon has remained steadfast in her commitment to defending civil liberties.
The 54-year-old lawyer is expected to play a crucial role at the Department of Justice, where she will focus on upholding constitutional rights and enforcing civil rights and election laws. Her nomination is a significant milestone for the Indian-American community and reflects her dedication to serving the nation.
