K. Stalin. This review provides valuable insights into how these progressive schemes have benefited the people of Tamil Nadu.
The Chief Minister’s Kamala Food Scheme
The Kamala Food Scheme was first launched in Madurai city on 15th September 2022, the birthday of the legendary leader, Periyar Anna, at a municipal school. Within a short time, 1,545 government-aided schools benefitted 1,14,000 students.
By 25th August 2023, the scheme had expanded to 30,992 government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu, benefiting 18.5 lakh students.
This scheme was extended to 3,995 more government schools in Tiruvallur district starting from 15th July 2024, impacting an additional 2.23 lakh students.
As of now, the Kamala Food Scheme is successfully running in 34,987 government and government-aided schools across the state, ensuring nutritious food for over 20.7 lakh students every day. These students have shown remarkable improvement in focus and academic performance.
This initiative has been widely praised for its impact on the students’ overall well-being and educational focus. The program aligns with the saying, “Food nurtures life, and life nurtures progress.”
The scheme has received significant attention, both within Tamil Nadu and beyond, for its effective implementation.
New Educational Support Scheme
The New Educational Support Scheme provides Rs. 1,000 per month to female students from government schools (grades 6 to 12) who are pursuing higher education. This scheme was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister, Mr. M. K. Stalin, on 5th September 2022, at Bharathiyar Women’s College.
The scheme has already benefitted 2,09,365 students in 2022-2023, with an additional 64,231 students joining in 2023-2024, totaling 2,73,596 beneficiaries. Since its launch, around 3,28,280 students have benefited from this program.
Tamil Puthuvan Scheme
In another groundbreaking initiative, the Chief Minister launched the Tamil Puthuvan Scheme on 9th August 2024. This scheme offers Rs. 1,000 per month to students from government and government-aided schools who have completed 12th grade with Tamil as the medium of instruction.
As of now, nearly 3.28 lakh students from Tamil-medium schools have started receiving this financial support, and the state government has allocated Rs. 360 crore to fund this scheme for the year. This initiative will further assist students who face financial challenges in accessing higher education, providing them with better opportunities for academic advancement.
Education and Literacy Scheme
The Education and Literacy Scheme, launched on 13th June 2022, focuses on students in grades 1 to 3 (below 8 years of age) and is designed to improve their reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
This program is a significant step toward ensuring that all children have access to quality education, with the ultimate goal of ensuring literacy and numeracy proficiency by 2025.
According to the State Planning Committee’s review, the scheme has led to a significant improvement in the quality of education, particularly in rural areas, where students have shown remarkable progress in literacy and numeracy skills.
The implementation of these schemes has not only improved the educational quality in Tamil Nadu but also created a brighter future for the children, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
