Tamil Nadu Leads the Nation in Renewable Energy Production

Tamil Nadu continues to maintain its leadership in renewable energy production in India. For the first time in the country, wind power generation was initiated in Tamil Nadu in 1986. With an installed capacity of approximately 11,000 MW in wind energy, Tamil Nadu ranks second in the nation. Similarly, with an installed capacity of about 9,400 MW in solar energy, Tamil Nadu holds the third position in India. To enhance its focus on renewable energy, the Tamil Nadu government established the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Company Limited, which is actively contributing to this mission.

In line with the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the state is committed to increasing its renewable energy output, particularly in environmentally sustainable methods. By 2030, Tamil Nadu aims to generate an additional 100 billion units of electricity from sources like solar and wind power. This includes projects such as pumped storage systems, battery energy storage systems, biomass, and co-generation.

Aiming for Higher Targets

While the Central Government has set a goal of achieving 43% renewable energy production by 2030, Tamil Nadu has set a more ambitious target of 50%. Under the guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, efforts are being intensified to achieve this objective.

Despite its leadership in renewable energy production, Tamil Nadu faces challenges in ensuring consistent power supply during periods when renewable energy generation fluctuates. To address this, significant reliance is placed on conventional power generation to ensure grid stability and meet the growing demand for electricity.

Industrial Growth and Power Demand

In the past three years, Tamil Nadu has witnessed substantial growth in the industrial sector, attracting increased investments from multinational companies. This development has created thousands of new jobs, leading to a 10% annual increase in electricity demand. To meet this demand, the government has planned state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly power plants in places like Udangudi and Ennore, ensuring no harm to the environment.

Currently, the Ennore project is progressing well and will play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability while enhancing renewable energy production.

A Sustainable Future

In the coming years, under the direction of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu aims to ensure a reliable and affordable power supply for its citizens and industries. The government will focus on a balanced approach, combining conventional and renewable energy production. This initiative will help Tamil Nadu achieve energy self-sufficiency and retain its position as the leading state in renewable energy production in India.
