Veteran Film Director Shyam Benegal’s Death Leaves the Film Industry Without a Voice on Social Issues – Deputy CM Eknath Shinde
Mumbai : The death of veteran director Padma Bhushan Shyam Benegal, who portrayed the struggles and issues of ordinary people through his films, has created a huge void in the film industry, which was known for producing films with social responsibility, expressed Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
In his condolence message, Deputy CM Shinde said, “Shyam Benegal was known for his ability to comment on contemporary social issues without showing any violence or sensationalism in his films. The stories and themes he presented in his films were truly thought-provoking and deeply impactful. His film ‘Ankur’ made the world take notice. The film industry has lost an artist who effectively voiced social issues through cinema.”
He added, “Benegal not only made films but also created series like ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, which received great appreciation from scholars. Shyam Benegal’s name is associated with the movement of parallel cinema in Indian filmmaking. His death has left the era of parallel cinema orphaned,” said Deputy CM Shinde in his condolence message.
