Gulmarg: A Winter Paradise Draws Tourists Despite National Mourning
SRINAGAR: Gulmarg, situated in the picturesque Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, has once again become the go-to destination for tourists this New Year season. Known for its breathtaking snow-capped peaks and enchanting landscapes, Gulmarg offers an array of winter activities, including skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, attracting visitors from across the country and beyond.

While the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department decided not to organize any official New Year events due to the seven-day national mourning following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the allure of Gulmarg remains undiminished. Tourists continue to flock to the region to bask in its natural beauty and partake in its thrilling outdoor activities.
First-time visitors are especially mesmerized by the region’s charm. A tourist, experiencing snow for the first time, described Gulmarg as a paradise on earth. “This is our first visit, and it has been an incredible experience. Seeing snow and heavy snowfall for the first time was magical,” she said. Another visitor echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that celebrating New Year in Gulmarg is an unparalleled delight.

Adding to its appeal, the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars, offers stunning views of the surrounding snow-laden mountains, leaving visitors in awe. With hotels reporting 100 percent occupancy, Gulmarg has reached full capacity, creating a lively and festive atmosphere despite the subdued official celebrations.
The Tourism Department, in collaboration with local talents, has worked to enhance the visitor experience with a carefully curated lineup of activities. Although New Year’s Eve in Gulmarg will lack the typical grandeur of official events, local arrangements promise memorable celebrations. Visitors can enjoy mesmerizing laser sound and light shows, alongside a musical extravaganza under the starry skies.
Meanwhile, Sonmarg, another winter wonderland in Jammu and Kashmir, is also hosting New Year activities. The Tourism Department has planned ice skating events to captivate tourists and locals alike, further showcasing the region’s winter magic.
Local businesses are reaping the benefits of this tourist surge. Bilal Ahmed, a local slide and sledge operator, expressed his joy, stating, “The influx of tourists during Christmas and New Year has significantly boosted local employment. We are delighted that tourism here is thriving.”
Accommodations, ranging from hotels to guesthouses, are nearly fully booked, and the region’s renowned cuisine and warm hospitality are adding to the unforgettable experience for visitors.
An official from the tourism department highlighted that the events and activities were strategically planned to meet the increased tourist demand as New Year approaches, ensuring Kashmir remains a sought-after winter destination.
