The largest & busiest railway complex in India is expanding.
Eastern Railway has taken an initiative to reduce the waiting time of long-distance trains approaching Howrah station by reconstructing and extending Platform No. 15 of Howrah station. The massive extension work of Platform No. 15 of Howrah station has been completed where the existing length of 312 meters has been extended to nearly 600 meters along with widening of the platform by 2 metres on an average. This will increase the capacity of Platform No. 15, where at present only 12 coach EMU can be accommodated, will be capable of dealing with 22 to 24 coach long distance trains after completion of the extension work.
Eastern Railway always explores possibilities of bringing more operational flexibility and punctuality. The extension work of platform no. 15 of Howrah will not only add to the passenger comfort but at the same time its extension work will enable this platform to receive 24 coach trains which will in turn facilitate reducing waiting time of long-distance trains namely mail and express trains from both South Eastern and Eastern Railway routes while approaching Howrah station.
Moreover, the platform shed has been extended at this platform from existing 50 per cent cover to 100 per cent. This full length covering of platform with the shed will bring more comfort to the passengers shielding them from natural extremities like rain or intense sunlight. The width of the platform has been increased providing more free space for the passengers to board or alight comfortably from the trains as well as moving on the platform hassle free. Associated with this, the necessary work for shifting of lines has also been completed

In a major boost to passenger convenience, Eastern Railway has commenced constructing the new Platform No. 24 at Howrah Station, for ensuring smoother train operations and a hassle-free travel experience. This new addition will reduce train delays, ease platform congestion, and improve connectivity—offering greater comfort for thousands of daily commuters. The expansion is a step towards modernizing one of India’s busiest railway hubs while catering to the increasing passenger traffic.
After inception of new Platform no. 24, train movement at Howrah Station will become significantly more efficient. The added capacity will streamline arrivals and departures, reducing platform overcrowding and ensuring better punctuality. Passengers can now expect shorter waiting times, faster boarding, and improved overall travel convenience.
This development is particularly crucial as Howrah Station serves as a key transit point for millions. The expansion supports Indian Railways’ modernization efforts, enhancing safety, efficiency, and travel experience. It also ensures the station is better equipped to handle growing transportation demands in the years ahead.
By investing in critical infrastructure, Howrah Division is redefining passenger convenience. The addition of Platform 24 reaffirms its commitment to providing a seamless, efficient, and comfortable journey for all travelers, marking a significant step in railway development.
