PHED Minister Inspects Seasonal Barrage Construction on Tlawng River
Aizawl – PHED Minister Prof. Lalnilawma conducted an inspection of the temporary barrage constructed at Tlawng River (Reiek Kai) for water storage. He was accompanied by Aizawl West III MLA Pu V.L. Zaithanzama and senior officials of the PHE Department.
Due to the seasonal depletion of Tlawng River, which serves as a major water source for Aizawl city, a temporary barrage has been constructed annually since 2022 to ensure adequate water supply during the dry season. During the inspection, the minister reviewed the construction of the barrage, which is 2.5 meters high and designed to store approximately 350 meters of water.
The minister also held discussions with PHED officials regarding ongoing projects and future plans for improving the city’s water supply. He emphasized the need for effective strategies to enhance water management and ensure sustainable supply solutions.
On April 9, 2021, the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-I and Phase-II required 38 MLD (million liters per day) of water for Aizawl city. However, due to seasonal shortages, only 31.461 MLD was available. Since then, various measures have been implemented to mitigate water scarcity. The construction of temporary barrages has played a crucial role in ensuring water availability during the driest months.
Based on PHED assessments, 2025 is expected to witness the lowest water levels in Tlawng River, highlighting the need for efficient water conservation efforts.
