Pope Francis Suffers Bronchospasm, Placed on Non-Invasive Ventilation
Vatican City: Pope Francis experienced a severe episode of bronchospasm, leading to vomiting and a sudden deterioration in his respiratory condition, Vatican News reported. The incident occurred on the afternoon of February 28, causing the Pope to inhale air forcefully, which worsened his breathing. He was immediately given bronchial aspiration to clear his airways and placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which helped stabilize his oxygen levels.
On Wednesday evening, the Holy See Press Office provided an update on his health, stating that his condition had shown slight improvement over the past 24 hours. The mild kidney insufficiency observed earlier had decreased, and a chest CT scan performed the previous night indicated normal progression of lung inflammation. Blood tests conducted that day also confirmed signs of recovery.
“The Holy Father remains on high-flow oxygen therapy but has not experienced any respiratory complications such as asthma today. Respiratory physiotherapy is ongoing. Despite the slight improvement, his prognosis remains guarded,” the statement said. It further mentioned that Pope Francis received the Eucharist in the morning and resumed some of his work in the afternoon.
The Pope’s health has been a source of concern for people in Rome and the Vatican, with daily updates being closely followed. Vatican officials have described his condition as “complex,” with a “guarded” prognosis, indicating uncertainty about his recovery. While signs of improvement have been noted, his condition—at least as of Tuesday—remains serious.
This marks Pope Francis’ fourth and longest hospital stay since he assumed the papacy in 2013. His prolonged illness has put the Vatican’s central administration on high alert, with officials closely monitoring developments.
The uncertainty surrounding his health has left the Vatican and the wider Catholic community in a state of anxious anticipation. Known for his unpredictability, Pope Francis has shared little about his future plans, adding to the suspense. The mood in Rome is best described by an Italian phrase frequently heard in these tense days: “Montagne Russe”—a rollercoaster.
