Union Home Minister Amit Shah Attends Assam Rifles Relocation Programme

Aizawl : An official function was held today at Sector 23 HQ Assam Rifles, Khatla, Aizawl, to mark the relocation of Assam Rifles from the city center to Zokhawsang. Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the event and addressed the gathering.

In his speech, Amit Shah stated that after 35 years, the long-pending demand of the Mizo people to relocate the Assam Rifles from central Aizawl to Zokhawsang has finally been fulfilled. He emphasized that this relocation is not just about moving a military camp but also about improving the city’s environment and facilitating urban development. He expressed gratitude to the people of Mizoram and assured them of the government’s commitment to their welfare.

He further highlighted that this relocation marks a significant milestone in Aizawl’s development, dating back to 1890, when the military was first stationed there. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for prioritizing the aspirations and concerns of the Mizo people. He also extended his appreciation to Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, DG of Assam Rifles, for their efforts in making this transition possible.

Amit Shah outlined the Central Government’s major infrastructure projects in Mizoram, including the four-lane highway from Vairengte to Aizawl, the double-lane road from Aizawl to Tuipang, and the ongoing construction of Sairang Railway Station. He reiterated that PM Modi’s leadership has ensured significant development in India’s Northeast region.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, in his speech, thanked Amit Shah for facilitating the relocation and emphasized that this move addresses a long-standing public concern. He described it as a historic decision that will benefit the people of Mizoram. He also acknowledged the contributions of Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and IB Director Tapan Deka in ensuring a smooth transition.

The Chief Minister also spoke about Mizoram’s geographical challenges and rapid urbanization in Aizawl, which necessitate better infrastructure and planning. He reassured the people that while Assam Rifles is being relocated from the city center, they will continue to serve Mizoram and the nation with dedication.

Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, also addressed the gathering, along with Vanlaldina Fanai, Commissioner, GAD, Mizoram. During the event, a new site map of Assam Rifles’ Zokhawsang camp was officially presented.

The relocation programme was inaugurated by Amit Shah, and Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena expressed gratitude on behalf of the Mizoram Government. Most Rev. Rotluanga, Bishop of Aizawl Diocese, conducted a prayer service, and Ramdinliani, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, delivered a vote of thanks.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, IB Director Tapan Deka, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mizoram Government, and Assam Rifles.

It may be recalled that on October 26, 2024, during a press conference at the CM’s office, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced that on October 23, 2024, at 7:00 PM, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Assam Rifles and the Mizoram Government at Mizoram House, New Delhi, finalizing the terms of the relocation. The press note also detailed the agreed timeline and relocation procedures.
