Protection for Gig Workers; Appeal for Registration on E-Shram Portal
Mumbai : While various schemes are currently in place for unorganized workers, the number of gig workers has seen a significant rise in recent years. To address their needs, the Central Government has launched a special portal to provide necessary facilities and social security benefits. Taking initiative in this regard, the District Collector’s office and the Labour Department are urging gig workers to register themselves on the Central Government’s E-Shram portal. This appeal was made through a public statement by Assistant Labour Commissioner N.V. Nagarare.
In recent years, platform-based economies such as Ola, Uber, Zomato, and Swiggy have become major sources of employment in India and globally. Millions of gig workers are engaged in this sector. To ensure their future security and enable access to government welfare schemes, the Centre has initiated a nationwide registration drive for unorganized workers.
Registered workers on the E-Shram portal will be eligible for a variety of social security and welfare schemes. This will benefit delivery personnel, riders, drivers, and other gig workers associated with platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, and Uber. The Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, has made it convenient for gig and platform workers to register on the E-Shram portal. Eligible gig workers are encouraged to register immediately at the official link: http://register.eshram.gov.in/#/user/platform-worker-registration, as urged by the District Collector of Mumbai Suburban.
Benefits of Registering on the E-Shram Portal
By registering on the E-Shram portal, workers gain access to various social security and welfare schemes. The registration also provides a formal identity to gig and platform workers. Moreover, this registration is essential to avail benefits under government schemes like the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
