RMC Alipore issues warning about possible thunderstorm

Thunderstorm across the districts of West Bengal during 09th to 13th April 2025.

At present a trough runs from southeast Madhya Pradesh to east Gangetic West Bengal across Chhattisgarh & Jharkhand at 0.9 km above mean sea level.  Due to favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, thunderstorm with lightning and strong gusty surface wind very likely to occur in some districts of West Bengal during 09-13th April 2025.

Warnings:

  • North Bengal –

09-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over all districts.  

10-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over all districts with heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over North Dinajpur district.

11-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Malda, North Dinajpur & South Dinajpur districts.  

Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to

occur at one or two places over rest districts with heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Jalpaiguri district.

12-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Malda, North Dinajpur & South Dinajpur districts.  

Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to

occur at one or two places over rest districts.

  • South Bengal –

10-04-2025 and 11-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, West Midnapore, Purulia, East & West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest of the districts.

12-04-2025 and 13-04-2025: Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts. Thunderstorm with gusty wind (speed: 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the East Burdwan, Nadia, Hooghly, Bankura, Jhargram, East & West Midnapore districts. Thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over rest of the districts.

Possible Impact:  

1. Some damages of standing crops, vegetables and horticulture.

2. Possibility of lightning strike especially in open field.  

3. Damage to loose/unsecured structure.

4. Traffic disruption in urban areas.

Action suggested:  

1. Take shelter in safe place during thunderstorm activity.  

2. Avoid taking shelter under tree/electric pole and avoid contact with water bodies.

3. Movement of traffic may be regulated judiciously during thunderstorm activity.
