UP govt runs 188 hostels for Scheduled Caste boys and 76 for girls

Lucknow : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government is taking significant steps to promote educational empowerment among Scheduled Caste (SC) students. A network of 264 free hostels operated by the Social Welfare Department is playing a vital role in supporting SC boys and girls in their pursuit of education. Among these, 188 hostels are designated for boys and 76 for girls.

These hostels not only offer free residential facilities to students from economically weaker SC backgrounds, but also provide a conducive academic environment, access to educational resources, and holistic development opportunities. In the financial year 2024–25, the state government allocated ₹41.42 crore for the maintenance and operation of these hostels, reflecting its strong commitment to inclusive education.

In the previous year alone, 8,649 Scheduled Caste students benefitted from these facilities. The initiative primarily aims to support those students who face financial or social barriers in accessing higher education. Beyond basic amenities like accommodation, meals, and study materials, the hostels also organize career counseling sessions and motivational programs to guide students in shaping their futures.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has repeatedly underlined the pivotal role of education in fostering social equality and driving societal progress. He has emphasized the importance of free hostels for Scheduled Caste students as a key enabler of this vision. Under his leadership, not only has the number of hostels increased, but there has also been a strong focus on enhancing transparency, quality, and accountability in their operation.

In the last eight years, the Yogi government has significantly expanded its support for SC students through comprehensive educational initiatives. Scholarships worth ₹708 crore have been disbursed to approximately 32,49,854 pre-matric students, while ₹9,662 crore has been provided to nearly 89,31,203 post-matric students—ensuring financial support at every stage of their academic journey.

In addition, around 120 Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Schools are being run across the state to further strengthen educational access for underprivileged communities. The Social Welfare Department has prioritized hygiene, security, and discipline within all hostels, creating an environment where students can pursue their studies without disruption.

Many hostel residents have expressed that this support has transformed their lives—describing the facility as a long-cherished dream now realized..
