AI Centers to be Established in Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur
Major MoU Signed Between Government of Maharashtra and IBM Technology
Mumbai : In a major step towards administrative transformation through artificial intelligence (AI), the Government of Maharashtra and IBM Technology (India) signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today at the Mantralaya. The ceremony was held in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
As per the MoU, three AI Skill and Excellence Centers will be set up in the state — focusing on different domains:
- Mumbai will host a center for geospatial analytics
- Pune will establish infrastructure for forensic science
- Nagpur will house a center for advanced AI research and MARVEL enforcement technology
The aim of this partnership is to make public service delivery more efficient, faster, and citizen-centric by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AI, hybrid cloud, data analytics, cybersecurity, and automation.
The collaboration will also enable simplified and personalized government services through virtual assistants and agentic AI. The ownership of AI models will remain with the Government of Maharashtra, ensuring full control over the deployed technologies. By using generative AI, the government aims to modernize administrative processes, make them predictive and transparent, with a strong emphasis on hybrid cloud infrastructure, identity management, and secure citizen access systems.
Government employees and students will receive training in AI, cybersecurity, and cloud technologies via IBM’s learning platforms.
Additionally, the MoU outlines support for MSMEs and the industrial sector to adopt AI and automation, which will help boost productivity and competitiveness.
Present at the signing were Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Minister for Information Technology Adv. Ashish Shelar, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, IBM Managing Director Sandeep Patel, and other dignitaries.
