UP’s municipal corporations set to see 100% surge in advertising revenue over next 5 years
Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target to increase the advertising revenue of Uttar Pradesh’s municipal corporations by 100% over the next five years. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Department of Urban Development has prepared a comprehensive roadmap to achieve this target.
The plan includes leveraging digital and static advertisements, constructing new routes, and expanding municipal boundaries—measures expected to bring about an unprecedented rise in income.
According to the proposed Advertising Manual 2025, advertising revenue is anticipated to grow steadily at 5% annually, alongside an additional 10% increase from complementary development initiatives.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the importance of financial self-reliance for urban development and directed municipal bodies to adopt transparent, technology-driven advertising policies. These reforms aim to enhance revenue and curb corruption. As part of this effort, digital screens and LED boards are being installed through Smart City projects, offering a modern and attractive platform for digital advertising.
Notably, municipal corporations earned Rs 78.9 crore from advertising in FY 2024–25. This is projected to rise to Rs 90.74 crore in 2025– 26 and Rs 104.35 crore in 2026– 27, eventually reaching Rs 158.70 crore by 2029–30.
A mix of digital advertising, mobile advertising, static hoardings, and the exploration of new revenue streams will fuel this growth. The expansion of municipal limits and the development of new routes will also contribute significantly to this increase.
In a recent review meeting, the Department of Urban Development announced that a new advertising manual is being drafted under the guidance of CM Yogi, incorporating several innovative features. These include incentives for mobile advertising vans, advertisements on buses and auto-rickshaws, and digital hoardings on private buildings.
The planned expansion of municipal boundaries is expected to create new commercial zones, further enhancing advertising potential.
Importantly, the new policy framework will ensure that advertising practices remain environmentally sustainable and do not compromise the visual appeal of urban spaces.
