Sunrisers Shine Bright in Chennai with Dominant Five-Wicket Win

Sunrisers Hyderabad delivered a clinical all-round performance to secure a convincing five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL 2025 showdown at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Sunrisers’ bowlers set the tone early, dismantling Chennai’s batting line-up and laying the foundation for a successful chase.

Chennai Super Kings were restricted to 154 runs in 19.5 overs, unable to bat through their allotted 20 overs. Harshal Patel emerged as the star with the ball, picking up 4 wickets for 28 runs in a brilliant display of disciplined pace bowling. He was ably supported by skipper Pat Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat, who claimed two wickets each. Mohammed Shami and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with a wicket apiece. The Sunrisers’ exceptional fielding further aided the bowling attack, highlighted by Kamindu Mendis’ stunning diving catch near the boundary to dismiss top-scorer Dewald Brevis for 42.

Chennai’s innings struggled to gain momentum after a disastrous start, with opener Shaik Rasheed dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammed Shami. Though Ayush Matre scored a decent 30 and Jadeja contributed 21, their efforts weren’t enough to post a competitive total. Sam Curran managed just 9 runs, and Shivam Dube added 12. Deepak Hooda’s quick 22 towards the end provided a slight boost. Captain MS Dhoni fell cheaply for 6, miscuing a slower ball from Harshal Patel straight to Abhishek Sharma at point.

In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the 155-run target in 18.4 overs, losing five wickets. Although they suffered an early blow with the dismissal of opener Abhishek Sharma for a duck, Ishan Kishan anchored the innings with a composed 44 off 34 balls, including five fours and a six. Travis Head added 19 runs before falling. The middle order saw brief cameos from Heinrich Klaasen (7) and Aniket Verma (19), but the finishing touch came from Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Mendis remained unbeaten on 32 from 22 balls, while Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed a steady 19* off 13 balls, guiding the team home with eight balls to spare. For Chennai, Noor Ahmad picked up two wickets, while Khaleel Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, and Ravindra Jadeja claimed one each.

With this comprehensive win, Sunrisers Hyderabad not only improved their standing in the points table but also dealt a heavy blow to Chennai Super Kings on their home turf, leaving their fans disheartened.

Team Maverick.
