Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Directs Immediate Meeting with NTC on Housing for Mill Workers in Mumbai
Mumbai : “Mill workers have made great sacrifices for the city of Mumbai. Therefore, our top priority is to provide them with housing within the city,” said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, as he instructed officials to urgently hold a meeting with the National Textile Corporation (NTC) to facilitate the allocation of more houses to mill workers. He also assured workers that discussions would be held with the Chief Minister regarding the reduction of housing prices in Shelu and Vangani.
A delegation of mill workers met with the Deputy CM at Sahyadri Guest House to discuss housing issues. During the meeting, Mr. Shinde reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of mill workers. The delegation and workers welcomed the decisions announced. Also present at the meeting were Minister of State Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar, former Minister Ramdas Kadam, MLA Kalidas Kolambkar, former MP Rahul Shewale, Principal Secretary to the Deputy CM Naveen Sona, Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department Valsa Nair Singh, MHADA Vice President Sanjeev Jaiswal, CEO Milind Borikar, and representatives of various mill worker unions.
Deputy CM Shinde emphasized the government’s genuine intention to provide housing in Mumbai for mill workers. He said a meeting would soon be held with NTC to explore the availability of land within the city, with the ultimate aim of facilitating more housing. He noted that the government is also working to make homes available across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). So far, 15,870 houses have already been allotted to mill workers, and nearly 100,000 eligible workers will be provided homes in the future.
He further mentioned that the state government has developed various infrastructure facilities across the MMR, focusing particularly on enhancing transportation networks. In light of these improvements, he encouraged mill workers to consider housing options in the MMR region as a viable and beneficial alternative.
During the meeting, some union representatives demanded a reduction in the prices of homes constructed in the Selu area. To this, Shinde responded that the matter would be discussed with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM & Finance Minister Ajit Pawar, and a decision would be taken accordingly.
