Workshop-Cum-Discussion Held on Juvenile Justice and Child Protection Laws Against Sexual Offenses

Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade Attends as Chief Guest

Raipur : A one-day workshop-cum-discussion was organized today at the New Circuit House in Raipur to raise awareness about the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The event was held in the presence of Women and Child Development Minister Smt. Laxmi Rajwade as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Rajwade stated that protecting children’s rights is a top priority of the Chhattisgarh government. She emphasized the need for sensitivity and swift action in all matters related to child protection and urged departments to work in coordination for timely resolution of pending cases. She also highlighted the importance of rehabilitation to prevent repeat offenses among children housed in juvenile homes and other institutions. The Minister administered an oath to all participants to help prevent child marriage and noted that cases of child marriage in the state are steadily declining—a trend that must be continued with collective effort until it reaches zero.

The workshop was chaired by Dr. Varnika Sharma, Chairperson of the Chhattisgarh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Dr. Sharma stressed that every child deserves a safe and dignified environment and said it is the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the law and lay a strong foundation for children’s future.

The aim of the workshop was to provide participants with comprehensive information about child protection laws, rules, and effective management of sensitive cases while promoting awareness of child rights. During the technical sessions, trainers Mr. Vipin Thakur and Mr. Sharwat Hussain Naqvi addressed participants’ queries and elaborated on the practical aspects of these laws. Secretary Smt. Shammi Abidi and Joint Director Shri Nandlal Chaudhary shared insights on departmental schemes and the role of child protection institutions.

Around 170 representatives attended the workshop, including Chairpersons and members of Child Welfare Committees, social workers from the Juvenile Justice Boards, departmental staff, and representatives from various NGOs working in child protection. The discussions extensively reviewed provisions under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 concerning the rehabilitation and best interests of children in conflict with the law and those in need of care and protection. Attention was also given to the POCSO Act’s provisions on preventing offenses against children and ensuring strict punishment for offenders. Experts also shared their views on issues such as child abuse, child marriage, and child labor. Participants pledged to take an active role in preventing child marriage, spreading awareness about child protection, and ensuring effective implementation of relevant laws.
