BIG BREAKING: Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket
New Delhi – In a major development for Indian cricket, veteran opener and Team India captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old cricketer, widely known as “Hitman”, made the announcement through a heartfelt social media post, bringing an end to his journey in the longest format of the game.
Rohit’s decision comes at a crucial juncture—just ahead of India’s upcoming five-match Test series in England, beginning June 20. Sources suggest the selection committee had already decided to relieve him of Test captaincy, with little chance of his inclusion in the squad. With this backdrop, Rohit’s retirement appears both strategic and emotional.
While Rohit will continue to represent India in ODIs, his Test journey concludes after 67 matches, in which he amassed 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. His highest score of 212 came against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019. One of his finest Test performances was in England during the 2021 tour, where he scored 368 runs at an average of over 52, mastering the swinging conditions with remarkable skill.
However, Rohit’s recent form in Tests had raised eyebrows. He managed only 164 runs across eight Tests against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Australia, averaging a mere 10.93. His leadership also came under scrutiny when India lost a home series 3-0 to New Zealand—an unprecedented feat—and followed it up with a 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India’s only win came under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy.
As Test captain, Rohit led India in 24 matches, winning 12 and losing 9. Despite his mixed record in the red-ball format, his leadership in white-ball cricket has seen success, including winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Rohit’s exit marks the end of an era, and the spotlight now shifts to potential successors. Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill are likely contenders to take the reins for the England tour.
With one of India’s modern greats stepping down from the Test arena, fans and analysts alike are reflecting on his legacy—a blend of explosive stroke play, resilience, and match-winning intent.
