Heatwave Alert for South Bengal from May 8, Malda from May 10

Heat Wave condition likely over some districts of South Bengal from 08th May, 2025 and over Malda district of North Bengal from 10th May, 2025.

Mainly dry westerly to north westerly wind likely to prevail at lower levels over the region and consequently, heat wave condition is very likely to occur over some districts of South Bengal from 8th May 2025 and Malda district of North Bengal from 10th May, 2025.

Details warning for next five days given below:

Temperature & Humidity Forecast: Day temperature (Maximum temperature) likely to rise by 3-5°C during next 03 days. It is expected to be above normal by 3-5°C over South Bengal from 08th May.

Maximum relative humidity over coastal districts likely to be 80% – 90% and over interior districts about 70 -80% and Minimum relative humidity is likely to be 45 – 55% over coastal districts and 30% – 40% over interior districts.

Heat Wave Warning for South Bengal:

08-05-2025 – Heat Wave conditions (Maximum temperature 40°C or more and above normal by ≥ 5°C) likely to occur at one or two places over West Burdwan, Purulia, Jhargram and West Midnapore districts. Hot and Humid weather conditions likely to occur at one or two places over rest districts of South Bengal.

09-05-2025 – Heat Wave conditions (Maximum temperature 40°C or more and above normal by ≥ 5°C) likely to occur at one or two places over West Burdwan, Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore and Bankura districts. Hot and Humid weather conditions likely to occur at one or two places over rest districts of South Bengal.

10-05-2025 & 11-05-2025 – Heat Wave conditions (Maximum temperature 40°C or more and above normal by ≥ 5°C) likely to occur at one or two places over West Burdwan, Birbhum, Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore and Bankura districts. Hot and Humid weather conditions likely to occur at one or two places over rest districts of South Bengal.

Heat Wave Warning for North Bengal:

10-05-2025 & 11-05-2025 – Heat Wave conditions (Maximum temperature 40°C or more and above normal by ≥ 5°C) likely to occur at one or two places over Malda districts of North Bengal.

Possible Impact for heat wave:

1. Heat is tolerable for general public but moderate health concern for vulnerable people e.g., infants, elderly, people with chronic diseases, people exposed to sun for prolonged period or doing heavy work.

2. Heat cramp, heat rash likely.

Action suggested:

1. Avoid prolonged heat exposure and outside work during 11AM to 4PM.

2. Wear light weight, light coloured, loose, cotton clothes. Cover your head: Use a cloth, hat / umbrella.

3. Drink sufficient water- even if not thirsty to avoid dehydration.

4. Recognise the signs of heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating and seizures. In case of black-outs, consult a doctor/ hospital immediately.
