“Tripura achieves remarkable tax milestone, surpassing Rs. 3000 crore collection, second only to Assam in the northeast.”
Agartala : Tripura’s tax collection has surged from a mere Rs. 42 lakh in 1976 to over Rs. 3000 crore in the last fiscal year, marking a significant milestone second only to Assam among northeastern states. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy announced this achievement in Agartala on Tuesday, highlighting that Tripura accomplished this without imposing additional taxes on its citizens.
“The tax department started operations in 1976 with modest collections primarily in Agartala and Churaibari gate,” Roy remarked during an event on the Mukhya Mantri Yuva Yogayug Yojana (MMYYY) scheme. He emphasized that Tripura’s robust tax collection mirrors its development and financial growth, positioning it just behind Assam in the northeast.
In the fiscal year 2022-23, Tripura collected Rs. 1899 crore under GST, with its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) reaching Rs. 640 billion at constant prices, reflecting a 10.38 percent growth from the previous year.
Roy, also responsible for Information Technology and Planning, outlined the MMYYY scheme’s benefits, including the distribution of smartphones to new graduates. Since its launch in 2020-21, 40,215 smartphones have been distributed to graduates from various educational institutions across the state. An additional 12,000 students from the 2021-22 graduating batch, initially left out, will also receive smartphones.
The scheme has allocated Rs. 20 crore so far, with Rs. 10 crore earmarked in last year’s budget, and the funding is set to increase annually to accommodate more eligible students. Roy assured that Tripura remains committed to ensuring ample funds for digital access, aligning with the national vision of Digital India.
