CM Devendra Fadnavis Pledges Support to MCA for New Cricket Stadium

Rohit Sharma Honored with Stand Named After Him at Grand Wankhede Ceremony

Mumbai – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government will fully support the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in building a new cricket stadium with a capacity of one lakh spectators, as the association approaches its centenary. He assured that if MCA proposes the plan, the government will provide land for the stadium and extend all necessary assistance.

Speaking at the naming ceremony of stands at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, CM Fadnavis expressed pride in naming stadium stands after individuals who have brought international glory to the nation. He noted that Wankhede is not just a stadium but a temple of cricket.

“Lords is not the true cricket pilgrimage site—Wankhede is,” said Fadnavis, highlighting the presence of the statue of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar at the stadium. He lauded the venue for shaping many legendary players over the years. Referring to Rohit Sharma as one of India’s most successful captains, he celebrated Sharma’s historic back-to-back international tournament wins. The Chief Minister also mentioned that naming a stand after a player still actively playing is a first in Wankhede’s history.

Fadnavis also acknowledged senior leader Sharad Pawar’s immense contribution to Indian cricket, calling him a pioneering administrator who elevated the sport’s stature in the country. Naming a stand after him is both fitting and honorable, he said. He also recognized Ajit Wadekar’s role in leading India to historic overseas victories in 1971 against the West Indies and England, noting the pride in unveiling a stand in his name.

Further praising MCA President Amol Kale, Fadnavis noted Kale’s significant efforts in a short span to uplift cricket and expressed hope that MCA will fulfill his vision for the sport.

“It will be a moment of fortune to witness a shot played by Rohit Sharma land in the stand that bears his name. I hope he makes that happen soon and fulfills all our wishes,” said the Chief Minister.

“A Special Moment in My Life” – Rohit Sharma

Former India captain Rohit Sharma shared his joy and gratitude, saying, “To have a stand named after me at Wankhede while I’m still playing is a tremendous honor. It’s a recognition of my service to the country. Sharing this moment with other cricketing greats makes it even more special.”

Former BCCI President and Member of Parliament Sharad Pawar, also present at the event, recalled his role in the development of Wankhede Stadium as then Sports Minister. He praised the MCA for consistently honoring legends of the game and appreciated the decision to name a stand after Rohit Sharma, whose accomplishments have made him a household name across India.

The event was attended by MCA President Ajinkya Naik, Vice President Sanjay Naik, Secretary Abhay Hadap, Mumbai Indians players, and cricketing stalwarts like Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri, along with MCA officials, club secretaries, and cricket enthusiasts.
