Stalin Inaugurates Rs 120 Cr College Buildings, Lays Foundation for Rs 207 Cr Projects
In Chennai, at Queen Mary’s College, a women’s hostel building constructed at a cost of ₹42 crore and other educational buildings constructed at a total cost of ₹120.02 crore by the Higher Education Department were inaugurated, and foundation stones were laid for new buildings to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹207.82 crore by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin.
Today (20.05.2025), at a function held at Queen Mary’s College, Chennai, the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin, inaugurated a women’s hostel building constructed at Queen Mary’s College at a cost of ₹42 crore under the Higher Education Department. He also inaugurated classrooms, laboratory buildings, office blocks, hostel buildings, and various other buildings constructed at a cost of ₹120.02 crore in Government Arts and Science Colleges, Engineering Colleges, Government Polytechnic Colleges, and Universities. Additionally, he laid the foundation stones for new higher education buildings to be constructed at a cost of ₹207.82 crore.
Further, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a new auditorium to be built in the Queen Mary’s College campus at a cost of ₹5 crore from the MP Local Area Development Fund of Hon’ble Member of Parliament Mr. P. Wilson.
In the context of enhancing higher education in Tamil Nadu, the government has launched several initiatives: establishing more higher education institutions, fostering research and innovation, encouraging technological development, ensuring student skill development and employability, creating qualified and capable youth through the “Naan Mudhalvan” scheme, providing ₹1000 monthly financial assistance to girl students who studied in government schools from Class VI to XII under the “Pudhumai Penn” scheme, and support for boys under the “Tamil Pudhalvan” scheme. Additionally, for first-generation graduates, transportation facilities and infrastructure in colleges and universities are being improved. Through these multiple initiatives, Tamil Nadu has secured the top position in higher education nationally.
A total of ₹269.52 crore has been allocated for the inaugurated and foundation stone-laid buildings under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme.
The women’s hostel building constructed at Queen Mary’s College was promised by the Honourable Chief Minister after women students requested a hostel at the Graduation Day function held on 22.11.2022. Accepting the request with compassion, the Chief Minister announced the construction of a hostel.
Accordingly, a modern hostel building accommodating 455 students has been constructed with all facilities at a cost of ₹42 crore and was inaugurated by the Chief Minister. He also interacted with the students residing there.
The hostel includes ten rooms on the ground floor, a seminar hall, elevators, CCTV cameras, a modern reading room, dining hall, sanitation facilities, and a health clinic for women students.
Details of the completed inaugurated works:
- Karaikudi, Alagappa Government Arts & Science College of Polytechnic: 6 classrooms, 3 labs, and 3 toilet blocks constructed at a cost of ₹4.18 crore.
- Karaikudi, Alagappa Chettiar Government Engineering & Polytechnic College: 4 classrooms and 1 toilet block at ₹1.68 crore.
- Krishnagiri Government Polytechnic College: 5 classrooms, 5 labs, 2 office rooms, and 2 toilet buildings at ₹6.72 crore.
- Tanjore District, Sengeeripatti Government Engineering College: 1 new lab, 1 office room, and 2 toilet blocks at ₹1.82 crore.
- Cuddalore District, Koodalur Government Polytechnic: Additional lab and toilet building at ₹81 lakh.
- Thoothukudi Government Polytechnic: 6 classrooms and 1 lab building at ₹2.62 crore.
- Chennai University, Taramani Campus: Hostel for PG and research students at ₹28.58 crore.
- Perambalur District, Maippur Government Arts & Science College: 6 laboratory buildings at ₹2.64 crore.
- Perambalur Government Arts & Science College: 14 additional classrooms at ₹4 crore.
- Pudukkottai District, Saranalayur Government Arts & Science College: 24 additional classrooms at ₹7 crore.
- Sivagangai Government Women’s Arts College: 4 labs and a toilet building for girls at ₹1.98 crore.
- Ramanathapuram District, Aranthangi Government Arts & Science College: 25 additional classrooms at ₹7.15 crore.
- Vellore District, Gudiyatham Government Thirumagal Women’s Arts & Science College: 14 classrooms and 2 labs at ₹5.40 crore.
- Tenkasi District, Surandai, Kamarajar Government Arts College: 14 classrooms at ₹3.97 crore.
Total cost: ₹120.28 crore for completed higher education buildings.
