Khandwa Brings Pride to Madhya Pradesh

Ranks No. 1 in India for Water Conservation among Districts

Khandwa district has brought glory to Madhya Pradesh by securing the first position in the country for water conservation efforts under the central government’s “Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari” (Water Conservation through Public Participation) campaign. The Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, recently released national rankings, placing Madhya Pradesh at 4th among all states.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the state’s mission-mode commitment under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s water conservation initiative. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the state has been actively running the “Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan” to revive old water bodies and conserve rainwater through various structures such as farm ponds, recharge pits, and Amrit Sarovars.

Chief Minister’s Congratulatory Message

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav expressed great satisfaction over Khandwa’s national recognition and extended heartfelt congratulations to the citizens, public representatives, and government teams of the district. He reiterated that water conservation remains a top priority for the state government and expressed confidence that all districts of Madhya Pradesh would achieve outstanding results in the campaign.

Unprecedented Efforts in Khandwa

According to Shri Aviprased, State Nodal Officer of the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan and Commissioner of MGNREGA, Khandwa district executed an unprecedented number of water conservation works. Through funds from MGNREGA, 15th and 5th Finance Commission grants, CSR initiatives, and public participation, the district constructed and registered over 1,29,046 water onservation structures, including 12,750 Well Recharge Pits, 1,500 Recharge Shafts, 23,570 Dugwells, 5,780 Boulder Check Dams, 1,256 Boulder Walls, 3,960 Sandbag Barricades, 7,455 Stone/Earth Field Bunds, 5,500 Gully Plugs (Gabion/LBP), 3,269 Drainage Trenches, 6,528 Handpump Recharge Units, 39,000 Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Systems, 58 Check/Stop Dams and Ponds, 4,800 Farm Ponds, 2,275 Drain Works, 1,500 Farm Ponds, 68 Contour Trenches, 750 Dry Borewell Recharges, 2,462 Renovation Projects, 6,560 Additional structures including revivals of handpumps, wells, and dried bore wells.

Verification and Awards

Following the release of national rankings, the Ministry of Jal Shakti will conduct physical verification of the reported works before formally announcing the awards for top-performing districts. The ranking is based on construction and conservation work completed between April 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025.

About the ‘Jal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari’ Campaign

Launched under Prime Minister Modi’s vision for integrated water management, the campaign promotes rainwater harvesting and community engagement with the motto: “Where it falls, when it falls – conserve rainwater.”

Initiated on September 6, 2024, under the “Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain”, the campaign encourages low-cost, scientific, and community-based groundwater recharge. It aims to spread awareness on artificial groundwater recharge, address water crisis challenges, and motivate individuals and organizations to take ownership of water conservation projects.

Activities include Construction and revival of water conservation structures through community participation, Cost-effective borewell recharge systems, Rooftop rainwater harvesting, and Recharge shafts and & rejuvenation.
