Eastern Railway observed International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD)
International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is a worldwide initiative aimed at spreading awareness among road users to avoid serious accidents at manned and unmanned level crossings. This campaign is spearheaded annually by the International Union of Railways. The theme of the 2025 ILCAD launch conference is “Helping people make good decisions” with the slogan “Safe decisions – every time.”
Across the globe, regardless of country or culture, the rail industry faces common challenges at level crossings and along railway tracks. The vast majority of collisions occur because individuals take deliberate risks or make poor decisions, often due to distraction, habit, or simple oversight.
To address these dangers, risk assessments, as well technical solutions and innovation are used to improve the most dangerous level crossings. Alongside these measures, education and awareness initiatives play a crucial role in promoting safe behaviour and, if necessary, enforcement measures may also be taken to counter inappropriate conduct near tracks and crossings. By raising awareness, educating the public, and working in collaboration with various sectors, ILCAD is striving to reduce the number of incidents and save lives.
Eastern Railway launched a massive awareness campaign in observance of ‘International Level Crossing Awareness Day’ today i.e., 05.06.2025. On the occasion of International Level Crossing Awareness Day, Eastern Railway have organised a campaign at B. B. D. Bag Level Crossing Gate No. 10C/T. The event featured an awareness rally from Eastern Railway Headquarters, Fairlie Place to B. B. D. Bag station. Various programs, including the distribution of leaflets containing safety guidelines were also organised.
Eastern Railway organised an extensive awareness drive to save precious human lives. Counselling teams from Eastern Railway covered level crossings across its jurisdiction, educating people on basic safety norms like:
- “Do not pass through the Level Crossing while the Gate is closed”;
- “Do not pass through the Level Crossing Gate while hearing the approaching sounds of trains”;
- “Do not use the mobile phones while going through the Level Crossing Gates”;
- “Observe the left and right side while passing through the Level Crossing Gates”;
- “Please resist your vehicle Infront of the stop sign at the Gates”.
The safety campaign aims to inspire individuals to make “safe choices – every time” by highlighting the serious dangers associated with trespassing on railway property. This campaign spanned across all four divisions: Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol, and Malda. Awareness programs were also conducted by railway staff, scouts and guides, Civil Defence volunteers, and NGOs.
