Lalu Yadav Turns 78: A Grand Celebration Becomes a Statewide Call for Social Justice
Patna — Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrated his 78th birthday on Wednesday in a grand, symbolic affair that blended festivity with political messaging. Marking the occasion in his inimitable style, Lalu Yadav cut a 78-pound cake with a sword, surrounded by his family, including elder daughter Misa Bharti and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav.
Supporters thronged his Patna residence in large numbers, turning the celebration into a vibrant public event. However, this was more than just a birthday party—it was a carefully orchestrated political statement.

RJD officially designated June 11 as ‘Social Justice and Goodwill Day’, using the occasion to reaffirm the party’s commitment to Lalu Yadav’s lifelong advocacy for the marginalised and underrepresented communities. Across Bihar and several other states, RJD workers organised food distribution drives, reading material giveaways for children, tree plantations, and community outreach activities among Dalits, Mahadalits, minorities, and other disadvantaged groups.
These initiatives were aimed at promoting Lalu Yadav’s core message of social equity and empowerment. In Delhi, members of the Student RJD wing celebrated on the JNU campus, putting up posters that hailed Lalu as “the voice of the voiceless” and “the support of the helpless.” Student leaders described him as a figure of resistance and a beacon of justice.

Political leaders from across the spectrum extended their greetings. Tejashwi Yadav, in an emotional social media post, paid tribute to his father’s legacy, writing: “Papa, you taught us the value of struggle, dedication, and raising our voice for the poor. Your teachings are our greatest asset.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also sent a warm message, highlighting his personal bond with Lalu Yadav: “Your life has been full of struggle, yet you’ve always raised your voice for the unheard. I wish you good health and a long life.”
Even Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary extended wishes, stating: “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to former CM and Union Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. I pray for your good health and longevity.”
Born on June 11, 1947, in Fulwaria village of Gopalganj district, Lalu Yadav has held pivotal roles including Chief Minister of Bihar and Railway Minister of India. His championing of the Mandal Commission transformed Indian politics by putting social justice at the centre of governance.
This year’s celebration once again affirmed that Lalu Yadav’s birthday has become more than a personal milestone—it’s a political movement that continues to galvanize the grassroots and inspire the next generation of leaders.
