Chief Minister Holds Review Meeting On Crop Insurance Scheme

Aizawl : Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma convened a review meeting today at the CM’s Office regarding the implementation of the Crop Insurance Scheme – Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), 2025–26. The meeting was attended by Agriculture Minister Pu P.C. Vanlalruata, officials from the Agriculture Department, and Finance representatives.

Pi Ramdinliani, IAS, Secretary of the Agriculture Department, gave a briefing on the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, which has been in effect in India since 2016. The meeting discussed the implementation plan for Mizoram for the 2025–26 cycle.

The scheme provides insurance coverage against crop losses due to natural calamities such as drought, floods, pest attacks, plant diseases, landslides, natural fires, storms, hailstorms, and other related risks. The premium rate under this scheme is fixed at 2% for cereals and pulses, and 5% for commercial crops during the Kharif season. In the Rabi season, the rate is 1.5% for cereals and pulses, and remains 5% for commercial crops. Other horticultural crops are also covered for a single season.

In previous years, different insurance companies have been selected for implementation, but this year, it is expected that the Government of India undertaking — the Agriculture Insurance Company of India — will take up the responsibility.

The PMFBY framework includes contributions from the central government, state government, and farmers. The respective share of contributions and responsibilities have been clearly outlined. The Mizoram government has expressed commitment to covering the farmers’ share of the insurance premium.

After detailed deliberation, the meeting concluded that the Crop Insurance Scheme 2025–26 is ready for effective implementation.
