Turning Waste into Wealth: Modern Biogas Plant to Be Set Up in Raipur
Chhattisgarh Moves Towards Self-Reliance in Green Energy
Raipur : In a major step towards sustainable and eco-friendly development, the Chhattisgarh government has initiated a significant project to transform urban waste into green energy. A tripartite agreement was signed today between the Raipur Municipal Corporation, the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for the establishment of a Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant under the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative.
This agreement is seen as a milestone for clean energy generation and environmental protection in the state. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the state is prioritizing clean energy, clean environment, and sustainable development. The CBG plant will not only aid in waste management but will also generate employment and boost the green economy.
The proposed plant will be established at Raonabhata village in Raipur, and is expected to process 100-150 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) daily to produce biogas. The project will be fully funded by BPCL at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore. It will utilize approximately 150 tonnes of solid waste per day collected from Raipur and nearby urban areas.
Key Highlights of the Project:
- Employment Generation: The plant is expected to generate around 30,000 man-days of employment annually, both directly and indirectly.
- Environmental Impact: It will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, pushing the state closer to its Net Zero Emission goal.
- Revenue and Income: Once fully operational, the plant is projected to contribute ₹1 crore annually in GST to the state’s revenue.
- Support for Organic Farming: The by-product—organic fertilizer—will promote and support organic agriculture in the region.
This is the second major CBG plant initiative in the state. A similar tripartite agreement was signed with Bhilai Municipal Corporation in 2024. In 2025, further MoUs were signed for setting up CBG plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Rajnandgaon, Dhamtari, and Bilaspur.
Present at the MoU signing ceremony were Raipur Collector Gaurav Kumar, CBDA CEO Sumit Sarkar, BPCL Biofuels Head Anil Kumar P, Raipur Municipal Commissioner Vishwadeep, and senior officials from both BPCL and CBDA.
This ambitious project reflects Chhattisgarh’s commitment to green energy, sustainable urban development, and creating a circular economy through innovative waste-to-energy solutions.
