Stream Conservation Brings Direct Benefits to Farmers in Villages

Better Irrigation Management Boosts Employment and Income

Raipur : Under the direction of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, special efforts are being made across all districts of Chhattisgarh for water conservation and preservation. In line with this initiative, the conservation work of the Godkatwa stream in Surajpur district has been successfully completed under the guidance of Collector Shri S. Jayavardhan. As a commendable model for water preservation and rural development, the project was implemented in the villages of Chandoora, Darhora, Deori, Pakni, and Semai under Pratappur Janpad Panchayat through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), at an approved cost of ₹58.81 lakh.

Chief Executive Officer of the District Panchayat, Mrs. Kamlesh Nandini Sahu, stated that the Godkatwa stream, a perennial water source, has now become not just a source of water but also a means of livelihood and prosperity for local villagers. As part of this conservation effort, a total of 285 permanent structures were constructed, including 64 structural works like brushwood check dams, earthen bunds, gully plugs, and boulder check dams. The project saw active community participation, voluntary labour, and significant effort from villagers.

She informed that farmers from Chandoora to Semai are now directly benefiting from the project. Irrigation facilities have expanded to cover over 50 acres, enabling farmers to grow healthy crops in both the Rabi and Kharif seasons. Additionally, farmers are now cultivating wheat, urad (black gram), and green vegetables even during the summer months. This has not only ensured food security but also reduced dependence on external markets, leading to increased household savings.

The improved water levels in the Godkatwa stream have also encouraged fish farming, providing villagers with an additional source of income. One farmer shared that during paddy cultivation, when irrigation water is crucial, the Godkatwa stream becomes a lifeline. Due to proper water availability, crops are now greener, healthier, and yield has improved significantly, with minimal crop damage.

This MGNREGA-backed initiative has not only enhanced local water resources but also generated substantial employment opportunities for villagers, leading to a rise in income and a noticeable improvement in living standards.

This project stands as proof that with proper guidance, community involvement, and planned execution, water conservation can transform rural life. The development of the Godkatwa stream has now become a model for effective water management and rural rejuvenation across the district.
