Gopal Italia Wins Visavadar Bypoll, AAP Makes Breakthrough in Gujarat
Victory Signals Rising Rural Support for AAP Ahead of 2027 State Elections
Junagadh : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Gujarat state president Gopal Italia has won the Visavadar Assembly by-election, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kirit Patel by a margin of over 17,000 votes, marking a significant breakthrough for AAP in the politically crucial Saurashtra region.

The bypoll was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Bhupat Bhayani, and saw a triangular contest between AAP, BJP, and Congress. From the start of the counting process, Italia took a commanding lead and never looked back, emerging as the clear winner.
According to the Election Commission of India, Italia secured 75,942 votes, while Kirit Patel of the BJP received 58,388 votes. The Congress candidate, Nitin Ranpariya, polled only 5,501 votes, highlighting the party’s ongoing struggle in Gujarat’s shifting political landscape.
Speaking after his victory, Italia said, “This win belongs to the people of Visavadar. They have voted for clean governance, development, and a viable alternative to traditional politics. This is just the beginning.”
Political analysts have interpreted the result as a morale booster for AAP as it looks to expand its footprint ahead of the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections. Italia’s victory, especially in a constituency dominated by agrarian voters, is being seen as a sign of rural and youth disenchantment with the status quo, and growing interest in AAP’s promises of job creation, education reform, and anti-corruption policies.
While conceding defeat, BJP leaders maintained that the party remains Gujarat’s primary political force, attributing the setback to localised factors. Senior party members stated they would assess the reasons behind the loss and adjust their strategy in the Saurashtra region, a key battleground in state politics.
Visavadar, located in Junagadh district, has historically swung between the BJP and Congress. This win marks the first time that AAP has captured the seat, signalling its expanding grassroots appeal beyond urban centres.
Gopal Italia’s political journey has been marked by activism and bold gestures. In January 2017, while still serving as a government employee, he publicly confronted then-Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel over alleged violations of Gujarat’s liquor prohibition law. Shortly after, Italia made headlines when he hurled a shoe at Home Minister Pradeepsinh Jadeja, shouting “down with corruption”—a protest that led to his suspension and resignation.
Between 2018 and 2020, Italia worked with the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), conducting “Kayda Katha” sessions to educate people about constitutional rights and governance. He formally joined AAP in June 2020 and rose quickly through the ranks—becoming state president by December 2020, a post he held until January 2023.
Under his leadership, AAP made its electoral debut in Gujarat’s local body polls in 2021, winning 27 seats in Surat and one in Gandhinagar. In the 2022 state elections, the party secured 13 per cent of the vote share and won five Assembly seats, laying the foundation for its growing influence.
