Bhopal’s historic ‘Bade Bagh ki Bawdi’ restored under Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan
Under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan initiated by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Bhopal’s historic heritage site ‘Bade Bagh ki Bawdi’ has been brought back to life. This achievement reflects the development and revival of a traditional water structure and the preservation of the state’s rich cultural and historical legacy. Chief Minister Dr. Yadav’s visionary leadership and strong commitment to environmental protection have transformed this campaign into a true mass movement for water conservation.
Built around 200 years ago, this stepwell is the largest in Bhopal. Located within the 32-acre expanse of Bada Bagh, which houses several traditional water structures, the stepwell stands out with an impressive depth of 60 feet. Nestled between two historic tombs, it is a remarkable example of architectural craftsmanship and engineering of its time.
The district administration and Bhopal Municipal Corporation undertook swift and focused efforts to revive the stepwell, including cleaning, desilting, weed removal, repairing walls and stairs, painting, and installing safety nets. Approximately 40 cubic meters of silt were removed, significantly enhancing the structure’s functionality. With an increased water holding capacity of 2,000 liters per hour, the stepwell has become a functional and valuable water source.
Today, this historic stepwell is once again serving a practical purpose as a water disposal site and is emerging as a focal point of Bhopal’s water heritage and cultural tourism. The foresight of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has breathed new life into this architectural marvel. The revival under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan is not merely the restoration of a structure—it stands as a testament to the Madhya Pradesh government’s deep and enduring commitment to water conservation and heritage preservation.
