Statistics Day 2025 Observed in Lunglei

Lunglei: In anticipation of the 19th National Statistics Day to be observed on 29th June 2025, the District Research Office, Lunglei, organised a commemorative event today at the Lunglei Press Club. The theme of this year’s celebration was “75 Years of National Sample Survey.”

The programme was chaired by Pu TC Zonunsanga, District Research Officer (DRO), who welcomed the gathering and spoke on the significance of the day. The event was graced by professional footballer Pu Lallianzuala Chhangte as the Chief Guest.

In his address, Pu Lallianzuala Chhangte highlighted the importance of statistics—the collection and interpretation of quantitative data—not just for individuals and organisations, but also for effective government policy-making and developmental planning. He emphasized the value of gathering accurate and comprehensive data, whether through small or large samples, to aid in informed decision-making.

Referring to his own profession, he pointed out that statistics play a critical role in football as well, helping players and coaches assess performance, analyse opponents, and improve gameplay strategies. He encouraged students to value statistical learning and underscored the importance of diligence, determination, and clear understanding as essential elements for success.

The event was attended by government officials, registrars of births and deaths, members of the Mizoram Journalists Association (MJA), and students of Adventist English School.

Sub-Inspector of Statistics, Pu H. Lalramchhana, delivered a presentation on the life and achievements of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, highlighting his pioneering work in the field of statistics and his significant contributions to India’s data infrastructure and policy planning.

National Statistics Day is observed across India every year on June 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, one of the country’s most distinguished statisticians. The observance was initiated by the Government of India in 2007. Prof. Mahalanobis, born on 29th June 1893, was a renowned scientist and statistician and founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931.
