CM Majhi Apologises for Puri Stampede, Orders Probe into Security Lapses
Three Devotees Killed, Six Injured During Rath Yatra Chaos; Odisha CM Promises Strict Action
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday issued a public apology following the tragic stampede near the Gundicha Temple in Puri that claimed the lives of three devotees during the Rath Yatra celebrations. He expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and announced a swift investigation into the lapses in security arrangements.
“Personally, I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees,” Majhi posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength for those grieving the loss of their loved ones.
The stampede occurred between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning near the Saradhabali area, shortly after the ceremonial Pahuda (ritual closing of the deities’ darshan) when the cordon opened for devotees to view the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra atop their chariots. A sudden surge in the crowd led to chaos and jostling.

“This negligence is unforgivable. I have ordered an immediate investigation into the security lapses and directed that strict and exemplary action be taken against those responsible,” CM Majhi stated.
Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania appealed to devotees to cooperate with the police and avoid clicking photos or videos during darshan, as such actions in crowded areas were creating further disorder.
“I urge all devotees to follow the instructions given by police personnel at various locations. Standing in dense crowds to take photos is causing trouble for others. Please cooperate with law enforcement,” Khurania said, confirming that a probe is underway and corrective measures are being implemented.
Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain explained that the stampede occurred when a large crowd rushed toward the temple cordon early in the morning. “Nine people experienced breathlessness and were immediately taken to hospital. Sadly, three have died and six are receiving treatment,” he told the media.
The deceased have been identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty, and Basanti Sahoo. The incident has cast a shadow over what is usually a joyous and spiritually significant event, raising urgent concerns about crowd management during major religious festivals.
