A Unique Example of Public Participation in Water Conservation
“Mor Gaon Mor Pani” Mega Campaign Leads to Construction of 110 Bori Bandhans and 915 Recharge Pits in Just Five Days
Raipur : In a remarkable display of community participation, the “Mor Gaon Mor Pani” (My Village, My Water) mega campaign in Bemetara district has led to the construction of 110 bori bandhans (sandbag check dams) and 915 recharge pits and soak pits within just five days. The large-scale water conservation drive, conducted from June 26 to June 30, mobilized villages across the district to build water harvesting and recharge structures to tackle the growing water crisis and sustain groundwater levels.

The campaign gave priority to the construction of water recharge structures like bori bandhans, recharge pits, and soak pits. The active involvement of public representatives, panchayat secretaries, employment assistants, women from self-help groups (SHGs), and local villagers turned the initiative into a vibrant mass movement.
To ensure the campaign’s success, training programs were held at the cluster level across all development blocks of Bemetara district. Sarpanches, secretaries, employment assistants, and SHG members were trained in water conservation techniques and equipped with technical know-how to independently construct recharge structures in their respective villages.
Thanks to this campaign, Bemetara district witnessed the successful creation of 110 bori bandhans and 915 recharge and soak pits. The campaign sparked exceptional enthusiasm among the people, many of whom have expressed their willingness to voluntarily participate in building more water conservation structures in the future.
The participants believe this public-driven initiative will have a long-term impact by improving groundwater levels and ensuring sustainable water availability. It has emerged as an innovative and inspiring model, demonstrating how collective community action can offer lasting solutions to water scarcity.
