Spain’s Golden Moment: Euro 2024 Glory!
BERLIN : Barcelona’s largest contingent at Euro 2024 can now call themselves European Champions as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Ferran Torres, and Fermín López’s Spain defeated England 2-1 in a memorable final in Berlin. This victory marks Spain’s record fourth European Championship title.
The match started cautiously, with both teams playing defensively to avoid early mistakes. Spain dominated possession, while England maintained a low block, waiting for counter-attacking opportunities. Despite some dangerous moments, both sides struggled in the final third, and the first half ended without any significant action.
Spain made a crucial halftime change, with Rodri being replaced by Martin Zubimendi due to an apparent injury. Despite the setback, Luis de la Fuente’s team began the second half with a bang, scoring just 70 seconds in. Lamine Yamal found Nico Williams, who finished powerfully inside the box to give Spain the lead. Spain continued to press, with Dani Olmo, Álvaro Morata, and Williams missing chances to extend the lead.
England, on the brink of being knocked out, saw a change in their attack when Gareth Southgate replaced Harry Kane with Ollie Watkins at the hour mark. This substitution injected new energy into the team, with Jude Bellingham’s long-distance shot going wide as their best chance. Lamine Yamal nearly doubled Spain’s lead, but a brilliant save from Jordan Pickford kept England in the game. England’s next change, bringing on Cole Palmer, paid off quickly. Palmer scored a beautiful goal from a Jude Bellingham assist to equalize with just over 15 minutes remaining.
The momentum shifted in England’s favor, forcing Spain to drop back and focus on possession to slow down the English attack. However, with five minutes left, Marc Cucurella’s cross found Mikel Oyarzabal in the box, and the Real Sociedad striker coolly finished to restore Spain’s lead. Spain then expertly managed the remaining time to prevent any further English opportunities, securing their Euro 2024 championship with a final whistle.
This win completes a perfect campaign for Spain, who won all seven of their matches in the tournament, solidifying their place as European champions once again.
