District Disaster Management Meeting Held in Kolasib

Authorities discuss damage and action plan for Durtlang–Kawnpui route amid monsoon disruptions

Kolasib : A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee, Kolasib, was held today under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Pu Robert C. Lalhmangaiha, with participation from various concerned citizens and officials. The meeting primarily focused on the damage and necessary steps following disruptions caused along the Durtlang to Kawnpui road due to ongoing monsoon rains.

During the meeting, the Kolasib DC highlighted that various areas in the district have been experiencing challenges due to the heavy rainfall. He particularly emphasized the need for urgent attention to the retaining wall near the Durtlang approach, which has weakened and contributed to road damage. Participants shared their views, and the DC urged swift and coordinated action to address the issue.

Due to the continuous rain, the NH-06 stretch connecting Durtlang to Kawnpui has become vulnerable, especially near the damaged retaining wall, which has led to road erosion and narrowing. While the road surface appears intact, its foundation has weakened, posing future risks. Since the area has a high risk of landslides, the officials discussed temporary restoration efforts as well as the need for permanent solutions.

After careful deliberation, it was agreed that due to the importance of the road and the duration required for reconstruction, alternative arrangements must be made. The committee resolved to explore whether Durtlang traffic can be diverted via the Four-Lane highway and to avoid reopening the damaged road segment unless absolutely necessary. Accordingly, a joint verification was scheduled for July 7, 2025, involving SDO(C) Kawnpui, Police, PWD, Project Pushpak Engineers, and Village Council Presidents (VCPs) of Kawnpui, Zanlawn, and Serkhan, along with other relevant officials and stakeholders.

Among those present at the meeting were:

  • Pi B. Malsawmtluangi (Additional Deputy Commissioner),
  • Pu Lalmuanpuia (Project Director, DRDO),
  • Addl. Superintendent of Police, Kolasib,
  • Senior CMO,
  • Senior Executive Engineers (PWD & PHE),
  • SDO(C), Kawnpui,
  • Assistant Engineer, Project Pushpak,
  • Chairman, Joint Village Council (Kawnpui),
  • VCP of Khamrang,
    and several other key individuals.

The session concluded with a call for collective responsibility and immediate field inspections to ensure the safety and connectivity of communities affected by monsoon-related damage.
