Jyothi Surekha Shines with Triple Medal Haul in Madrid
Vijayawada archer leads India to two silvers and a bronze at Archery World Cup Stage 4
Hyderabad — Star archer Vennam Jyothi Surekha delivered a stellar performance at the Archery World Cup Stage 4 in Madrid on Saturday, helping India secure all three of its medals at the event. The Vijayawada athlete clinched a silver medal in the individual compound final, narrowly losing to Great Britain’s Ella Gibson 147-148 in a tightly contested match.
In the women’s compound team event, the Indian trio of Jyothi, Parneet Kaur, and 16-year-old debutant Prithika Pradeep settled for silver after a heartbreaking loss to Chinese Taipei in the final. Despite topping the qualification round with 2116 points and holding a narrow lead of 170-169 going into the final set, the team faltered under pressure, scoring just 55 points to their opponents’ 58. The final score read 227-225 in favour of Chinese Taipei—another reminder of India’s recurring struggles in crucial moments.
India had taken an early lead in the match, tying 57-57 in the first round before edging ahead 58-56 and 115-113 in the next two. However, the third round saw them drop 8 points, allowing the opponents to close the gap. The Indians led until the final stretch but failed to hold their nerve.
Jyothi added a bronze medal in the mixed team event alongside Rishabh Yadav. The pair defeated El Salvador’s Paola Corrado and Douglas Vladimir Nolasco 156-153 to finish on the podium.
Despite the near misses, Jyothi’s consistency and composure remain a bright spot for Indian archery on the world stage.
