Strict Action Against Illegal Bike Taxi Operations in Mumbai

Mumbai : The Transport Department has received multiple complaints regarding the illegal operation of bike taxis through mobile applications in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. These services are being run without obtaining any official permission from the Transport Department, resulting in violations of the law and deception of both the government and passengers.

As per the provisions under Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory for aggregators to obtain licenses for app-based passenger transport services in accordance with Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines. However, many such companies have been operating without following these regulations.

In response, a joint crackdown was carried out simultaneously in Mumbai, Thane, Vasai, Vashi, and Panvel by 20 flying squads under various transport offices in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. During this operation, action was taken against 93 illegally operating vehicles, and 85 bike taxis were seized.

Further, the department has initiated the process of registering criminal cases against unauthorized aggregators, the Additional Transport Commissioner said in an official press release
