CM Stalin Reviews Key Urban Infrastructure Projects in Tamil Nadu’s Municipal Corporations and Municipalities
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin chaired a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai today (July 17, 2025) to assess the progress of basic civic infrastructure projects across 25 Municipal Corporations and 144 Municipalities in the state, focusing particularly on urban governance and drinking water supply systems.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized that comprehensive reviews and updates must be conducted on ongoing infrastructure development and monitoring activities in urban local bodies. He specifically instructed officials to accelerate the completion of critical projects including stormwater drainage, drinking water distribution systems, underground sewerage, and road development.
The Chief Minister directed authorities to ensure efficient management of urban waste, equitable distribution of drinking water, timely completion of sanitation work, and proper maintenance of streetlights. He stressed that all tasks announced in the State Assembly should be completed within the stipulated timeline and made functional for public use without delay.
Highlighting the state’s achievements, he noted that in the past four years, Tamil Nadu has implemented road development projects spanning over 15,000 kilometers at a cost exceeding ₹8,000 crore. Major multi-sectoral initiatives including Chengalpattu suburban railway expansion, new drinking water projects, and stormwater drainage developments have been successfully executed.
The meeting revealed that 3,199 new projects in municipal corporations and 4,972 projects in municipalities are set to begin soon. The Chief Minister instructed that these works must start immediately and be completed before the onset of the northeast monsoon. He also emphasized the importance of inter-departmental coordination—especially among the electricity board, water supply departments, and municipal bodies—for effective execution.
He also directed officials to clean stormwater drains and ensure proper water flow systems before the monsoon. Priority must be given to low-lying and flood-prone areas, with timely interventions to prevent waterlogging and ensure public safety.
