‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ Observed with Exhibition at Govt. Champhai College

Champhai : As per the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the 25th of June was observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day). In continuation of this nationwide observance, an exhibition was held today at Govt. Champhai College in Champhai District.

The exhibition highlighted the suppression of civil liberties and democratic rights during the declaration of National Emergency in India on June 25, 1975, under Article 352 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It focused on the misuse of power during that period, the violation of constitutional values, and the importance of safeguarding democracy. It also showcased various accounts of resistance against authoritarian rule and the consequences faced by the dissenters.

Students and the general public actively participated in the event. Many wrote their names on a commemorative signature board as a symbolic gesture of support for constitutional values and democratic rights.

‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ is observed in remembrance of the dark day in 1975 when the Indian Emergency was declared, marking what is considered by many as a grave violation of the Constitution. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of that declaration, the Central Government encouraged such observances to educate the public about the importance of constitutional governance, civil rights, and the rule of law in a democratic nation.

In Champhai District, the event was organised in four different locations. It had already been observed earlier at Govt. GM High School, Champhai, and at the Khawbung BDO Office. Today’s exhibition at Govt. Champhai College marked the final leg of the local observances.
