Gunman Kills Four, Including Bangladeshi-Origin NYPD Officer, in Manhattan Office Shooting
New York : A horrific mass shooting shook the heart of Manhattan on Monday evening when a lone gunman opened fire at a Park Avenue skyscraper, killing four people—including a Bangladeshi-origin police officer—before turning the weapon on himself.
The incident unfolded at a 44-storey office building housing multinational investment giant BlackRock, which manages over $11 trillion in assets. At around 6:30 p.m. local time, 27-year-old Shane Tamura entered the lobby armed with an M4 rifle. He shot and killed 36-year-old police officer Didarul Islam and a woman present in the lobby, according to police reports.
Tamura then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, which houses a real estate company that owns the building. Once there, he opened fire at random, killing a man and a woman, before shooting himself dead.
Mayor Eric Adams, visibly emotional, addressed the press shortly after the tragedy. “Officer Islam was an immigrant from Bangladesh,” Adams said. “He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. His courage represents the very best of this city.”
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Officer Islam leaves behind a grieving family. “He had two sons, and his wife is pregnant,” she said. “He made the ultimate sacrifice—shot in cold blood while wearing the uniform that symbolized his commitment to this city.”
Authorities identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident with a documented history of mental illness. Commissioner Tisch revealed that Tamura had driven cross-country to New York just days before the attack. Police found medication, ammunition, a revolver, and the M4 rifle case in his black BMW parked nearby.
While the motive remains unclear, investigators are working to understand why Tamura targeted the building’s 33rd-floor real estate office. The shooting has sparked disturbing memories of a similar killing just four blocks away, less than a year ago, when a young man fatally shot a health insurance CEO, citing systemic industry exploitation.
The aftermath of the attack caused chaos in midtown Manhattan. The building and surrounding area went into lockdown, with NYPD tactical teams conducting searches for explosives and possible additional threats. Civilians were escorted out of buildings with their hands up as police secured the area.
As first responders attempted CPR on Officer Islam on the sidewalk, he was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over gun violence, mental health care, and building security in one of the world’s most densely populated business districts. An official investigation is underway.
