MP is Largest Tomato Producing State

Aug 2025 : Madhya Pradesh is the third-largest state in the country in terms of vegetable production. Farmers in the state are cultivating vegetables on 12,85,000 hectares of land. Among these, the highest production is of tomatoes. It is noteworthy that Madhya Pradesh ranks first in the country in tomato production. In 2024-25, tomatoes were cultivated on 1,27,740 hectares in the state, with an estimated production of 36,94,702 metric tonnes. In the last four years, the area under tomato cultivation in the state has increased by 16,776 hectares. In 2021-22, tomatoes were cultivated on 1,10,964 hectares, which increased to 1,27,740 hectares in 2024-25, a result of rising demand in the market and the growing recognition of tomatoes from Madhya Pradesh. Tomatoes from the state are in high demand in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. Due to the hard work of farmers and government schemes, tomato production is the highest among vegetables at 28.92 metric tonnes per hectare. The average productivity of horticulture crops in the state is 15.02 metric tonnes per hectare. Out of a total horticulture crop area of 26,91,000 hectares, farmers cultivate vegetables on 12,40,000 hectares, producing 2,45,98,000 metric tonnes, making the state third in the country. The state ranks first in the production of tomato, coriander, and garlic among vegetable crops.

In recent years, farmers’ interest in tomato cultivation has grown. The state government is also providing a 50% subsidy on tomato seeds. The number of small-scale industries based on tomatoes is also increasing. Under the PMFME scheme, it has become easier for farmers to set up food processing units.

Farmers of Anuppur District Set New Record in Tomato Production

Fifteen thousand farmers of Anuppur district have created a record by cultivating tomatoes and producing 1,40,000 metric tonnes. Tomato cultivation is widespread in the district’s three major clusters — Jaithari, Anuppur, and Pushprajgarh — directly benefiting around 15,500 farmers. Both hybrid and local tomato varieties are being cultivated in the district. The state government is providing a 50% subsidy on seeds, drip irrigation, and sprinkler systems. This has reduced farmers’ costs while improving production and income. Tomatoes from Anuppur district are being supplied to Shahdol, Rewa, and Satna in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Raipur, Ambikapur, and Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and various districts of Maharashtra. This has ensured market availability and better prices for farmers. To increase farmers’ income, local marketing facilities have also been developed by the horticulture department.

The cost of tomato cultivation per hectare is between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000. From this, farmers are earning profits of Rs 1,50,000 to Rs 2,00,000. Per acre, this profit reaches up to Rs 1,00,000, strengthening farmers’ financial conditions.
