Trump Ends Extended Secret Service Protection for Kamala Harris Ahead of Her Memoir Tour

  • Former Vice President Kamala Harris loses extended Secret Service protection granted by Joe Biden.
  • Trump administration cites “legal limits” but critics call it political retaliation.
  • Democrats, especially in California, voice concern for Harris’s safety.
  • Move comes as Harris prepares to launch a nationwide book tour this fall.

Washington, D.C.: Former Vice President Kamala Harris has lost her extended Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump revoked a year-long security extension that had been quietly granted by his predecessor, Joe Biden. The decision comes just weeks before Harris begins a national book tour to promote her memoir, 107 Days, chronicling her failed 2024 presidential campaign against Trump.

Ordinarily, former vice presidents receive Secret Service protection for only six months after leaving office. Harris’s protection period ended on July 21, 2025. However, Biden, then-president, approved an undisclosed order extending her detail for an additional year, citing her high profile and ongoing public role. According to a senior White House official mentioned that on condition of anonymity, Trump has now terminated that extension, effective September 1.

Harris’s office confirmed the development. “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” said Kirsten Allen, a senior advisor to Harris.

Democratic Backlash

The move has triggered strong criticism from Democrats and Harris allies, particularly in her home state of California. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned Trump’s action as “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation.” She warned that the decision “puts the former Vice President in danger,” and vowed to coordinate with state leaders to ensure Harris’s safety during her public appearances.

Critics argue that the move contradicts Trump’s frequent emphasis on protecting political figures, particularly after he survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.

Pattern of Retaliatory Measures

Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump, 79, has rolled back security protections for several former officials and perceived rivals. These include former national security advisor John Bolton, whose home was recently raided by the FBI in connection with classified documents, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Mark Milley.

Earlier this year, Trump also removed government bodyguards assigned to Biden’s adult children, Hunter and Ashley, calling their security details “ridiculous.” He has further stripped several officials — including Biden himself — of security clearances to access classified information.

Ironically, after his first presidential term (2017–2021), Trump had extended Secret Service coverage for six months to all four of his adult children and three senior administration officials, a move that drew criticism for its cost to taxpayers.

Harris’s Upcoming Memoir Tour

Harris, 60, has maintained a relatively low profile since her electoral defeat but is set to return to the public eye this fall with the release of her memoir 107 Days. Published by Simon & Schuster, the book will hit shelves in the U.S. on September 23. Harris has described the memoir as a candid reflection on her short-lived presidential bid after Biden, now 82, withdrew from the Democratic race amid concerns about his cognitive health.

Her nationwide book tour is expected to attract significant attention, raising fresh concerns about her security.

Trump’s Official Order

A news channel, which first reported the decision, said Trump signed a memo directing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to “discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law.” The Secret Service has not yet issued an official comment on the matter.

While federal law guarantees lifetime protection for former presidents and their spouses — meaning Biden and his wife Jill remain covered — it does not extend the same privilege to former vice presidents. With Trump’s revocation order, Harris must now rely on private security or state-level arrangements for her upcoming public engagements.
