Mahua Moitra Faces Fresh Row Over Alleged Remarks on Namasudra, Matua Communities
Kolkata, Aug 2025 : Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar, Mahua Moitra, has once again found herself at the center of controversy, just days after criticism of her comments on Union Home Minister Amit Shah. A police complaint has already been lodged against her, and now the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has circulated a new video of one of her speeches, the authenticity of which remains unverified.
The video, shared by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya on Sunday, allegedly shows Moitra speaking at a meeting in Karimpur-2 block on August 28. In it, she is heard making comments about the voting behavior of Namasudra and Matua communities. Malviya described her remarks as a direct insult to these groups and a “scathing attack” on their identity.
In the video, Moitra appears to express frustration that, despite benefitting from several welfare schemes, sections of the electorate continue to vote against the Trinamool Congress. Referring to Scheduled Caste and Matua booths, she is heard saying: “If there are 100 voters at every SC booth, Namasudra booth, Matua booth, 85 are BJP votes, 15 are from other parties. Mamata at work, Mamata on the road…”
The controversy deepened when she allegedly remarked about a community: “They come wearing wooden garlands to take allowance, but what happens at the time of voting? It may sound bad, but I am telling the truth.” She also referred to the state’s Lakshmi Bhandar scheme during her comments.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Shuvendu Adhikari, strongly condemned Moitra’s remarks, echoing the BJP’s charge that her statements were derogatory and offensive.
The Trinamool Congress is yet to issue an official response, but the row is expected to intensify with political stakes high in West Bengal ahead of the next round of elections.
