Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong jointly inaugurated Phase 2 of the JN Port–PSA Mumbai Terminal (BMCT) through video conferencing from Hyderabad House, New Delhi. Maharashtra to Lead the Nation in Maritime Economy

CM Fadnavis said that due to the port infrastructure development policies of the past decade, India has witnessed significant changes in its maritime economy. In the coming years, India will play a key role in the global maritime economy. Maharashtra, by strengthening the country’s maritime capacity, will lead India in this sector.

He noted that with the collaboration between JNPA and PSA India, this terminal has become the largest container handling hub in the country. With the upcoming operation of the Vadhavan Port, India will secure its place among the world’s top ten ports. The MoUs signed between India and Singapore will further strengthen bilateral cooperation, he added.

The CM expressed confidence that this terminal will once again place Maharashtra at the forefront of the nation’s port capacity and make a significant contribution to global supply chains.

Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur gave detailed information on the central government’s maritime development policy, while JNPA Chairman Unmesh Wagh presented the details of the terminal’s expansion.

India’s First Container Terminal Powered by Renewable Energy

The terminal, operated by PSA International, is India’s first container terminal fully powered by renewable energy and compliant with the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). With the Phase 2 expansion, its annual handling capacity has doubled from 2.4 million TEUs to 4.8 million TEUs. The quay length has increased to 2,000 meters, equipped with 24 quay cranes and 72 rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs).

The terminal is connected via road and rail to over 63 Inland Container Depots (ICDs), making it the most extensive multimodal network in India. This expansion will provide a major boost to Maharashtra’s logistics and trade sectors.

Industry experts have described this development as a “game-changer.” With cutting-edge equipment and multi-dimensional infrastructure, PSA Mumbai is poised to become a key driver of India’s maritime growth. India is steadily advancing to play a major role in the global maritime economy.
