Yogi govt’s ODOP scheme elevates Kalanamak Rice to global markets

Lucknow : Under the leadership of the Yogi government, England and United States of America will now experience the unique taste of Kalanamak rice. After nearly seven decades, this renowned rice variety will be exported to England and, for the first time, to US. The popularity of Kalanamak rice has surged since it was declared an ODOP by the state government.

This year marks a significant milestone as 5 quintals of Kalanamak rice will be exported to England. In a similar vein, another 5 quintals will be exported to America for the first time. Prior to this, Kalanamak rice had already made its way to Nepal, Singapore, Germany, Dubai, and other countries.

England has a historical fondness for the taste and aroma of Kalanamak rice. This tradition dates back about seven decades, when British colonials had large farm houses across India. These farms were so prominent that they became landmarks, such as Birdghat and Campierganj. Siddharthnagar was also part of this trend, where the British cultivated Kalanamak rice extensively. They appreciated its unique flavor and fragrance, which commanded high prices in England.

During that era, shiploads of Kalanamak rice were sent to England. However, following the abolition of the zamindari system about seven decades ago, this trade gradually declined and ultimately ceased after India gained independence.

ODOP initiative boosts popularity of Kalanamak Rice

The popularity of Kalanamak rice has surged ever since the Yogi government declared it the One District One Product (ODOP) of Siddharth Nagar. Renowned for its unmatched taste, aroma, and superior nutritional value compared to traditional rice, Kalanamak’s appeal has grown both domestically and internationally. Its recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI) product has further expanded its reach.

In addition to designating Kalanamak as the ODOP of Siddharth Nagar, the state government undertook extensive branding efforts to highlight its unique qualities. This strategic promotion led to a remarkable increase in the cultivation area, yield, and demand for Kalanamak rice. As a result, this exceptional rice variety is gaining more recognition and appreciation worldwide.

Exports of Kalanamak Rice triple in three years

The exports of Kalanamak rice have seen a significant surge, tripling in just three years. According to data presented in the Rajya Sabha on December 17, 2021, the export percentage of Kalanamak rice was 2 percent in 2019-2020, which doubled to 4 percent the following year, and reached 7 percent in 2021-2022.

Padmashree Dr R.C. Chaudhary, Chairman of the Participatory Rural Development Foundation (PRDF) in Gorakhpur, an organization focused on promoting Kala Namak rice, reported that they exported 55 tonnes of Kala Namak rice to Singapore and 10 tonnes to Nepal over the past two years, with consistent demand from both countries. Additionally, smaller quantities have been exported to Dubai and Germany.

Dr. Chaudhary noted that apart from PRDF, many other organizations are engaged in the export of Kala Namak rice. The export platform for Kala Namak rice has been established and is expected to expand further.

Notably, Kala Namak rice is the only natural rice in the world that contains vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, offering unique health benefits. With a higher protein and zinc content than other varieties, it is beneficial for brain health and essential for body development at all ages.

Its low glycemic index (49 to 52%) makes it a healthier option for people with diabetes than other rice types. This information is sure to pique the interest of health-conscious consumers.
