India Settle for Silver After 1-4 Loss to Hosts China in Women’s Asia Cup Final

Hangzhou, Sept 2025: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team clinched the silver medal at the Women’s Asia Cup 2025 after going down 1-4 against hosts China in the final. Navneet Kaur gave India an early lead, but China stormed back with goals from captain Ou Zixia, Li Hong, Zou Meirong, and Zhong Jiaqi to claim the continental crown.

India began the match in dramatic fashion, striking within the very first minute. Veteran forward Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner with a powerful hit, giving the visitors a dream start. China, stung by the early setback, quickly raised their intensity. They pushed forward aggressively, winning a penalty corner in the fourth minute, but India’s defence stood firm with Sunelita Toppo blocking on the line and goalkeeper Bichu Devi pulling off a sharp save. Another penalty corner in the 15th minute was thwarted by India’s first rusher, keeping the narrow lead intact at the end of the opening quarter.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with China maintaining relentless pressure. In the 17th minute, they forced another penalty corner, only for Bichu Devi to deny them once again with a superb save. She repeated her heroics in open play three minutes later. However, China finally found the breakthrough in the 21st minute, when captain Ou Zixia successfully converted from a penalty corner to level the scores. With the equaliser, the hosts gained momentum as both teams went into halftime locked at 1-1.

India emerged determined in the third quarter, pushing China back and making repeated circle penetrations in search of a second goal. Yet the turning point came in the 40th minute, when India failed to capitalise on a penalty corner. China pounced on the rebound, launching a swift counterattack. Li Hong carried the ball with pace, cutting past defenders before unleashing a backhand strike that beat the goalkeeper and nestled into the bottom corner, putting the hosts 2-1 ahead.

India’s hopes of a comeback dimmed in the final quarter as China sealed the contest with two goals in quick succession. In the 51st minute, Ying Zhang delivered a precise pass inside the circle that found Zou Meirong, who finished deftly with her first touch. Just two minutes later, Zhong Jiaqi made a penetrating run down the right flank, cutting into the circle before firing past the Indian goalkeeper to score China’s fourth goal.

Despite India’s spirited start and brave defensive efforts in the first half, China’s relentless attacking play and clinical finishing in the second half proved decisive. The Indian players fought hard till the final whistle, but the 1-4 defeat meant they had to settle for silver, while the hosts celebrated their Asia Cup triumph in front of a home crowd.

For India, the silver medal remains a significant achievement, underlining their progress and consistency at the continental level. The tournament also offered valuable experience ahead of upcoming global competitions, where the team will look to build on this performance and aim for gold.
