Maharashtra Aims to Lead in Green Steel Sector: CM Devendra Fadnavis
Inauguration of ‘AIIFA Steelex 2025 – Steel Mahakumbh’ Held in Mumbai
Mumbai, Sept 2025 – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that Maharashtra will not only be the best state in the steel industry but will also emerge as a leader in the green steel sector. He expressed confidence that Maharashtra will play a major role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mission Green Steel.
He was speaking at the inauguration of AIIFA Steelex 2025 – Steel Mahakumbh at Goregaon, Mumbai, attended by Union Minister of Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, State Industries Minister Dr. Uday Samant, senior officials, UNDP India head Dr. Angela Luci, AIIFA President Yogesh Mandhani, and several industry leaders.
CM Fadnavis said India had surpassed global expectations by meeting its greenhouse gas reduction and clean energy goals ahead of time. Maharashtra is set to generate 58% of its energy mix from renewable energy by 2030, and by 2026, farmers will receive 16,000 MW of electricity entirely from solar power, reducing subsidies and lowering industrial tariffs annually for the next five years.
Highlighting transformation in Gadchiroli, once known for Naxalism, he said it is now poised to become the country’s new steel city. Investments worth ₹80,000 crore have already come into Maharashtra’s steel sector, and the state is expected to rank first in steel production in the coming years. He also outlined plans to plant 5 crore trees in Gadchiroli, of which 40 lakh have already been planted, creating a sustainable ecosystem for industry while preserving natural resources.
Maharashtra is also leading in green hydrogen, green ammonia, gas value chain, and battery storage. The state has signed MoUs worth 75,000 MW for pumped storage projects, with 7,000 MW power generation to begin within two years, enabling 24/7 green power supply and stabilisation of the national grid.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi praised Maharashtra’s initiatives, noting that under PM Modi, India’s renewable capacity has grown from 2.44 GW in 2014 to nearly 30 GW, making India the world’s third-largest non-fossil energy producer. He said India has set a target of 300 million tonnes of steel production by 2030, including 50 million tonnes of green steel for export, which has become essential under global carbon tax regimes.
Industries Minister Dr. Uday Samant added that the steel industry in Gadchiroli would replace guns with jobs, bringing sustainable livelihood to local communities.
On this occasion, the Government of Maharashtra signed MoUs worth ₹80,962 crore with nine companies, expected to generate over 40,300 jobs. The Chief Minister also distributed Green Steel Certificates to participating companies.
