Mizoram Government Plans to Expand GST Revenue Collection
Aizawl, Sept 2025 : A meeting was held between the Vice Chairman of the Mizoram Resource Mobilization Committee (MRMC), Pu Haukhuma Hauzel, IAS (Rtd), the Taxation Department, and representatives of the Aizawl City Local Council Association. The discussions focused on ways to expand the tax base so that the Mizoram Government can increase its revenue collection under GST.
In the meeting, it was suggested that more shopkeepers in Aizawl city should be encouraged to pay GST through collaboration with the Local Council Association. As per GST law, any shop/business with an annual turnover of Rs. 20 lakhs and above must register for GST. This means that if a shopkeeper earns at least Rs. 1.75 lakhs per month, they are mandatorily required to register. However, many shopkeepers and small businesses in Aizawl and across Mizoram, despite reaching the income threshold, do not register due to reluctance or other reasons. To address this, the Taxation Department and Local Councils discussed ways to spread awareness and ensure more registrations.
If this initiative is implemented successfully, the Mizoram Government expects to generate significantly more revenue through GST than at present. As earlier emphasized by MRMC, the Taxation Department is also working to strengthen its collection system.
The Mizoram Resource Mobilization Committee (MRMC) was set up by the Mizoram Government to increase tax and non-tax revenue. The committee continues to make various recommendations to boost the state’s revenue resources.
At today’s meeting, besides Pu Haukhuma Hauzel, IAS (Rtd), Vice Chairman, MRMC, those present included Pu C.C. Lalchhuangkima, Member Secretary (MRMC); Pu H.K. Lalhawngliana, Commissioner of State Tax; Pu C. Lalbiaknunga, President of the Aizawl City Local Council Association, along with other officials.
