Jaishankar Meets Malaysian FM Mohamad Hasan, Discusses Bilateral Ties and Myanmar Situation at ASEAN Summit
Kuala Lumpur, Oct 2025 : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Haji Hasan on Monday on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where the two leaders reviewed the progress in India–Malaysia bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional developments, including the situation in Myanmar.
Malaysia, as the current Chair of ASEAN, is hosting the summit and related meetings under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
“A warm meeting with FM Mohamad Haji Hasan of Malaysia. Conveyed our best wishes for successful ASEAN and East Asia Summits. Discussed the progress in our bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the Myanmar situation,” Jaishankar posted on X after the meeting.
The External Affairs Minister is representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 20th East Asia Summit being held alongside the ASEAN meetings. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the summit provides a platform to deliberate on key issues related to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, and to exchange views on current regional and international developments.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and extended warm greetings from Prime Minister Modi. “A pleasure meeting PM Christopher Luxon of New Zealand on the sidelines of ASEAN 2025 meetings. Extended warm greetings from PM Narendra Modi. Welcome his commitment to advance our bilateral cooperation and nurture a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Jaishankar wrote on X.
The External Affairs Minister also held a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, ongoing trade talks, and broader regional and global issues. “Glad to meet Marco Rubio this morning in Kuala Lumpur. Appreciated the discussion on our bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues,” Jaishankar said in another post.
On Sunday, Jaishankar called on Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s best wishes for the successful hosting of the ASEAN Summit. “Honoured to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Conveyed the best wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a successful ASEAN Summit. Value his thoughts on strengthening our bilateral cooperation and people-to-people linkages,” the Minister wrote.
Jaishankar’s meetings in Kuala Lumpur reflect India’s active engagement with ASEAN and East Asia partners, aimed at deepening regional cooperation, promoting connectivity, and upholding peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
